Repeal of High-Earner Income Tax and Prohibition of Future Income Taxes

Plain-English Summary

This initiative seeks to repeal Washington's new 9.9% income tax on household wage income above $1 million, which is set to begin in 2028. It also proposes to prohibit state and local governments from enacting any future individual income taxes. The measure would retain certain tax relief provisions from the original law, such as expanded tax credits for low-income families and sales tax exemptions on specific products.

What each outcome does

IF YES PASSES

If this initiative passes, the state's new income tax on high earners would be repealed, and state and local governments would be prohibited from imposing any future individual income taxes. Certain tax relief measures from the original law would remain in effect, but a pledge of 5% of tax collections to the Fair Start for Kids account would be eliminated.

IF NO PASSES

If this initiative fails, the state's new 9.9% income tax on household wage income above $1 million would remain in effect, with collections starting in 2029. State and local governments would retain the ability to pass income taxes in the future, and the original law's provisions, including the Fair Start for Kids account funding, would be maintained.
